Critical design is mentioned in the book 「Hertzian Tales」 by Anthony Dunne(1941, Head of design interaction department in RCA, member of british design duo Dunne & Raby) and has been introduced to the world. 10 years later in 2008, critical design become center of argument about border between design and art through 「Wouldn’t it be nice: Wishful think in art and design」 exhibition.

Critical design is about rearranging way of design thinking to beyond usual scope of design. This is attitude than methods. It is influenced by Italian radical design from 70th and conceptual design from 90th. Critical design skeptical about creating new technology and market. But, It pushes designers to think and question more. Critical design is critical about captured resources and methods from everyday life, suggest alternative way of thinking to the society. This action for us, is thinking about the future before it comes to us.

Critical design borrows methods from art to be outstand from usual design approach. But at the same time they believes critical design can be different from art by more focusing to the everyday life. However, critical design can not be away from criticism about their methods which are widely found in Relational aesthetics, Conceptual art and Avant-garde.

Critical design’s UK centered regionality is their own identity. However at the same time, it is dillema to block it’s own extensibility. In early 1990, Margaret Thatcher’s 3rd industry focused policy was very influential to the birth of critical design. It was the same wave of Young British Artist and boom of UK art market. Then, how about illegitimate child of critical design: asian or non europian designers who studied critical design in UK? Could we see them as a globalism or exit-europism of critical design?

Critical designs are gathered in Festival B:om 2014 in Seoul, South Korea. How Critical Design and Dawon Art can make it’s intersection? How critical design can exit-europe or exit-art? Like meta-stable things before it has been stabilized.

비평적 디자인 Critical Design 은 영국의 디자인 듀오 던 앤 라비 Dunne & Raby 의 앤서니 던 Anthony Dunne, 1941-, RCA 디자인 인터렉션과 학과장 이 1999년 쓴 책 「헤르츠 이야기: 탈물질시대의 비평적 디자인 Hertzian Tales, 시지락, 박해천외 역」 에서 처음 언급되며 세상에 알려졌다. 10년이 지난 2008년 제네바 예술학교와 디자인학교의 합병을 기념해 열린 유럽 순회전시 「좋지 아니한가: 미술과 디자인의 소망적 사고 Wouldn’t it be nice: Wishful think in art and design」에서 비평적 디자인은 공론화된 예술과 디자인의 경계에 대한 논란의 중심에 섰다.

비평적 디자인은 시각적, 미학적 설계를 넘어 디자인적 사고방식을 재구성함을 말한다. 이는 방법론이라기보다는 태도이며 70년대 이탈리아 급진적 디자인 Italian Radical Design, 90년대 유행한 개념적 디자인 Conceptual Design 의 계보를 잇는다. 비평적 디자인은 새로운 기술과 시장을 만들어 내는 데있어 회의적인 태도를 지니며 디자이너들에게 더 많은 사색과 질문을 요구하고 있다. 일상으로부터 추출된 삶의 자원과 방식들에 대해 비판적인 태도를 지니며 대안적 사고들을 산업사회에 제안한다. 이 행위는 우리에게 미래를 먼저 고민하게 해주는 것과 같다.

비평적 디자인은 디자인의 보수적 개념으로 부터 탈출하기위해 예술에서의 방법론과 접근방법을 차용하는데, 예술보다는 일상에 더 귀 기울임으로서 예술과 차별 되었다고 믿고 있다. 즉, 일상이 스스로의 추진력과 불편함의 근원이라는 것이다. 하지만 비평적 디자인의 태도와 방법론은 그 유사성이 관계미학 Relational Aesthetics 이나 개념미술 Conceptual Art 멀게는 아방가르드 운동 Avant-garde 까지 폭넓게 발견되면서 표현의 방법론에 대한 비판에서 자유롭지 못하다.

비평적 디자인이 가진 영국 중심적 지역성은 스스로의 정체성인 동시에 확장 가능성을 스스로 포기하는 딜레마로 작용하고 있다. 1990년대 초 영국 마가렛 대처 정권의 3차산업 진흥 정책과 창조산업 육성은 비평적 디자인의 자발적 또는 타의적 탄생에 지대한 영향을 미쳤는데, 영국 젊은 예술가 집단 Young British Artist 의 출몰과 런던 예술 시장의 폭발적인 성장은 같은 맥락에서 해석될 수 있다. 이때 영국 및 유럽의 디자인 / 예술 유학 붐으로 부터 발생된 사생아적 아시아 작가들의 비평적 디자인은 탈유럽적 맥락에서 어떻게 해석 및 평가가 가능할 것인가. 더욱이 이 영광스러웠던 순간은 2008년 유럽발 경제위기로 인해 짧은 운명을 다했다.

비평적 디자인이 2014년 서울 페스티발 봄에 모였다. 비평적 디자인은 어떻게 다원예술과 교집합을 만들어 내는가. 비평적 디자인은 어떻게 탈유럽/탈예술 하는가. 마치 개체화 되기 전의 준-안정적인 개체들처럼.

질베르 시몽동 Gilbert Simondon 에 따르면 개체에는 준-안정적인 체계 meta-stable 가 존재하는데 이는, 특정 개체의 개체화되기 이전 상태를 의미한다. - 질 들뢰즈 Gilles Deleuze -
